Mayor Tim MacPhee officially proclaimed April 24-April 30, 2022, as National Volunteer Week in the Town of Vegreville at last night’s Regular Council Meeting.
Last night’s Regular Council Meeting also provided an opportunity to congratulate a specific Vegreville volunteer as Mayor MacPhee presented Joyce Stewart with the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers on behalf on behalf of the Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General of Canada.
Stewart – who was invited to Ottawa to receive the medal at ceremony on April 21 but elected rather to accept it in Vegreville – was chosen as a recipient due to her nearly five decades of devoted volunteerism, including as a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion, a dedicated member of her church, a caring teacher and more.
Stewart says she is humbled.
Mayor Tim MacPhee says that he views this as a monumental moment in his time in office.
The Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers recognizes exceptional volunteer achievements from across the country and aboard, celebrating a wide range of voluntary contributions. It is an official honour created by the Crown and is part of the Canadian Honours System.
