This is the fourteenth week of Alberta’s transition to weekly COVID-19 reporting.
The numbers shared this week cover the time period from June 14th to June 20th.
1,086 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the province during the past week based on a total of 8,918 tests.
According to the geospatial data on the alberta.ca website, zero new cases of COVID-19 has been reported in Two Hills County during the past 7 days, 1 in Lamont County, and 2 in the Vegreville/Minburn County area.
There are currently 661 individuals in hospital in the province due to COVID-19, which is down by 58 from last week’s total. 17 of those patients are in intensive care units – that is down by 2 from last week.
13 new deaths related to the virus have occurred during the past week. Alberta’s total number of deaths due to COVID-19 during the pandemic is 4,604.
Meanwhile, Alberta’s health minister says the province will remain vigilant despite lifting most restrictions in the province related to COVID-19.
Alberta lifted the last few pandemic restrictions last week including mandatory masking on public transit and isolation for people who test positive for COVID-19 or have symptoms.
Jason Copping notes Alberta is bracing for an increase in colds and flus again in the fall, but he says more has to be done to reduce the strain on the health care system, which was already a problem before the pandemic.
Copping says during the pandemic many people stopped going to the doctor and stayed at home, which has put added pressure on the health care system now as they return.
Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced during this week’s news conference that it was their last regularly scheduled COVID update, but the province will of course provide further updates as necessary.
