The Vegreville Rangers reached the end of their playoff road last night, falling 12-1 to the visiting Wainwright Bisons and losing their quarter-final series in a four-game sweep. The loss brings the first season under Head Coach Mark Chornohus to a close. The first-year bench boss says there were a lot of positives to take away from the year for the young squad.
The game was also the last in the junior hockey career of captain Devon Hamaliuk. The local product says there are a lot of great memories to look back on, including making history in the Rangers return to the league.
The Wainwright Bisons advance to the semi-finals of the NEAJBHL playoffs to meet the Lloydminster Bandits who swept Cold Lake in round one. Elsewhere, another pair of first round sweeps have led to a semi-final meeting between St. Paul and Vermilion.
Things get underway in game four.
Landon Olson (#28) had the lone goal for Vegreville in the loss.
Tyler McKenna prepares for one of his many saves in Friday’s loss. McKenna faced more than 80 shots before being pulled late in the third.
Corbin Blyan (#15) lets a shot go.
